nATHAN mANION: LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT – AN INCREASINGLY POPULAR TOOL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS EVALUATION

Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an increasingly popular method to understand the environmental impacts of emerging sustainable products or development projects. Despite the recent interest in LCA, how it differs in scope and application from other impact assessments or environmental analysis is not usually as well understood. And for those interested in using LCA there are often barriers in understanding its methodology and application that make it difficult to perform for non-practitioners. In this talk, Dr. Nathan Manion, the Director of Greenscale Inc. will provide an overview of LCA, outlining a bit of its history and how current methods evolved. The talk will also discuss some of the key aspects of its application and shed some insight into how LCA can be used to support decision-making associated with energy and sustainability planning.

Dr. NATHAN MANION is the Director and Senior Consultant at Greenscale Inc., a sustainability consulting company he founded in 2021. He received his PhD from Queen’s University in the Renewable Energy Development and Implementation (REDi) lab in the Department of Geography and Urban Planning, where he specialized in life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology and looked at the sustainability of bioenergy feedstock production in Ontario. His current company specializes in using LCA as a tool to evaluate the whole environmental impact of emerging projects, products, technologies, and services across a range of sectors.

Over the last 20 years, Nathan’s research and consulting work has included bioenergy for industry, sustainable forestry and forest management, green building designs, ecosystem service valuation, climate change planning for communities and businesses, brownfields, and environmental remediation in the Canadian Arctic.

Nathan is also an active member of the Ontario Woodlot Association (OWA), a grassroots organization in Ontario dedicated to the promotion of sustainable private forest management. When Nathan is not working, he usually spends the majority of his time with his two young children, and sometimes finds time to garden and cook.
