Soren Christianson and Cedric Pepelea: UNDERSTANDING BETTER HOMES KINGSTON PROGRAM LAUNCH
This presentation will guide you through a new Kingston home energy retrofit program.

Better Homes Kingston, launched in April 2022, is a Home Energy Retrofit program offering no-interest property loans, incentives and rebates to enable Kingston Residents to reduce GHG emissions and Energy Consumption in their homes, with the potential to also save money on their utility bill.

To qualify for the program, residents must own a property in Kingston.

Through the Better Homes Kingston Program, the City aims to help retrofit 20 to 50 per cent of single-family homes built prior to 1991. Residents who take advantage of this flexible, no-interest property loan can repay the amount over a period of up to 20 years or at any time without penalty. People who have homes built after 1991 may still apply to the program.

Soren Christianson is Program manager of Better Homes Kingston and Project Manager, Climate Leadership at the City of Kingston. During his time at the City, Soren has worked across three departments, starting in Environmental Initiatives, and now in the Climate Leadership Division. He has completed Single-use plastics (SUPs) reduction initiatives at the Grand Theatre (implemented), and the INVISTA Centre (delayed due to Covid-19), researched and drafted multiple By-Laws, including the Open Door Air-Conditioning By-Law, and Short-term Rental By-Law.
Cedric Pepelea is Chief Operating Officer for Sustainable Kingston and Energy Coach for Better Homes Kingston. Cedric is an Energy Systems Engineering Technologist with experience in commercial energy management for both the public and catholic school boards in Kingston and surrounding area. He then took over as Executive Director for Red Squirrel Conservation Services, a local non-profit focused on residential and commercial energy audits. Cedric is now serving as the Chief Operating Officer for Sustainable Kingston with a strong focus on supporting the City of Kingston’s Better Homes Kingston program. He will use his expertise to help guide homeowners through the intimidating process of deep energy retrofits and the many incentive programs through his Energy Coach role.
